What is Astronomy?
Astronomy is the scientific study of objects and phenomena beyond Earth's atmosphere. Astronomers investigate planets, stars, galaxies, black holes, nebulae, and the evolution of the universe itself.
Modern astronomy combines observations from ground-based telescopes, space telescopes, satellites, and computer simulations to understand the cosmos.
Major Objects in the Universe
| Object | Description |
|---|---|
| Planet | A large object that orbits a star. |
| Star | A massive sphere of hot plasma producing energy through fusion. |
| Moon | A natural satellite orbiting a planet. |
| Galaxy | A collection of billions of stars, gas, dust, and dark matter. |
| Nebula | A cloud of gas and dust where stars often form. |
| Black Hole | An object whose gravity is so strong that light cannot escape. |
The Solar System
Our Solar System consists of the Sun and all objects gravitationally bound to it, including eight planets, dwarf planets, asteroids, and comets.
| Planet | Type |
|---|---|
| Mercury | Rocky Planet |
| Venus | Rocky Planet |
| Earth | Rocky Planet |
| Mars | Rocky Planet |
| Jupiter | Gas Giant |
| Saturn | Gas Giant |
| Uranus | Ice Giant |
| Neptune | Ice Giant |
Stars and Their Life Cycle
Stars form within giant clouds of gas and dust called nebulae. Over millions of years, gravity causes material to collapse and ignite nuclear fusion.
- Nebula
- Protostar
- Main Sequence Star
- Red Giant or Supergiant
- White Dwarf, Neutron Star, or Black Hole
Galaxies
Galaxies contain vast collections of stars, gas, dust, and dark matter. The Milky Way Galaxy is home to our Solar System.
- Spiral Galaxies
- Elliptical Galaxies
- Irregular Galaxies
Practice Questions
